National Association of Under
Water Instructors previously
stated within their policies
that students must be twelve
(12) years of age in order to
participate in scuba diving
classes.

That standard has been
changed. 

The minimum age
requirement has been
reduced to ten (10) years

SNORKELING

Learn to snorkel in a pool setting with a scuba instructor!  Our instructor will walk you through the basics and give you an in-pool demonstration and practice time.   Ask questions, try the gear.
 

Your instructor will perform a SCUBA demonstration and question/answer session for those interested at the conclusion of snorkeling class.    

Minimum Age & Requirements:  Six (6) years of age or older and in good physical condition.  Children 6-9 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
 

TRY SCUBA

Maybe you've been intrigued by the thought of scuba diving...but you're just not sure it's for you.  Maybe you have a friend or relative that you want to introduce to the sport.  This class will interest you!

Our instructor will walk you through the basics and give you an in-pool demonstration.  Ask questions, try the gear.
 

If you discover you'd like to continue into a scuba diving education, we will credit this Try Scuba class fee to the (Beginning) Scuba Diver course and get you started on your underwater explorations.    

Minimum Age & Requirements:  Ten (10) years of age or older and in good physical condition.
 

SCUBA DIVER (BEGINNING) & JR SCUBA DIVER
 

Scuba Diver is our entry-level scuba certification course during which you will learn the fundamental knowledge and skills to safely scuba dive in open water.

Your instructor will teach you about dive equipment, the science of diving, responsible diving practices and the environment.  You will also learn many skills in the water with practice and time for your safety and comfort; and you can complete your training with a minimum of five (5) open water dives.

Minimum Age & Requirements:  Ten (10) years of age or older and in good physical condition.
 

OPEN WATER CERTIFICATION

This course is a continuation of SCUBA diver.  Completion of this course is required to receive your certification card.

All skills covered in SCUBA diver are applied during this two (2) day course.  Four (4) training dives are performed and students are encouraged to participate in a fifth recreational dive to practice skills or check out Michigan Lakes.

Minimum Age & Requirements:  Ten (10) years of age or older and in good physical condition, and (Beginning) Scuba Diver Certification.
 

ADVANCED SCUBA DIVER
 

This course is a continuing education certification course for certified divers.  It is an enjoyable program of continued supervised experience designed to introduce divers to a variety of diving activities to be taught entirely in an open water setting. 
 

This course is appropriate for divers who:

  • Desire additional training.

  • Have moved from one diving area to another and desire local orientation

  • Do not have, but wish to obtain, NAUI Certification

  • Desire orientation to a variety of diving sites and conditions.

As  part of your certification, you will complete a minimum of six (6) open water dives including three (3) separate dives for navigation, night or low visibility diving and deep diving (130 feet/40 meters maximum depth), plus three (3) additional dives as planned with your instructor.  Some of the many different dives you may do include:
 

  • Search and recovery.

  • Boat diving.

  • Light salvage.

  • Hunting and collecting.

  • Exploration and underwater mapping.

  • Wreck diving (non-penetration).

  • Observation and data collection.

  • Diving in surf or currents.

  • Altitude diving.

  • Salt water diving (in areas were most diving is fresh water).

  • Fresh water diving (in areas were most diving is salt water).

  • Shore diving.

  • Diving for photos or video.

  • Using dive computers.

Minimum Age & Requirements:  Ten (10) years of age or older and in good physical condition, and (Beginning) Scuba Diver Certification.

ENRICHED AIR NITROX DIVER
 

Want to extend your bottom time, lessen your surface interval, and maximize every dive?  Become an Enriched Air Nitrox diver.
 

This course is to provide the diver with the information necessary to utilize EANx as a breathing medium.  You will learn how to choose the proper blend of Nitrox for your dive profile, determine maximum depth limits for your Nitrox mixture, analyze your breathing mixture, plan and safely execute each dive.  Your instructor will teach you about the physiology of oxygen and nitrogen; advantages, disadvantages, and risk of Nitrox; oxygen toxicity; hazards and precautions of handing oxygen; the concept of equivalent air depth; use of EANx with standard air dive tables; common gas mixing procedures; and more.
 

After your exam, you can qualify for the Nitrox recognition card, or go ahead and complete two (2) dives to receive your Nitrox Diver certification card.  Your NAUI instructor can integrate your Nitrox course into your (Beginning) Scuba Diver or Advanced Scuba Diver course!

Minimum Age & Requirements:  Fifteen (15) years of age or older and in good physical condition, and (Beginning) Scuba Diver Certification*, book/study packet.
 

MASTER SCUBA DIVER
 

The Master Scuba Diver course is a continuing education certification course for divers who wish to increase their understanding and enjoyment of diving.  Emphasis is on student participation and practical application of knowledge in open water after a classroom discussion of subjects.  This course is an excellent progression toward NAUI Leadership roles.
 

During your training, you will engage in a minimum of eight (8) open water dives including the following required dives:
 

  • Emergency procedures and rescue.

  • Deep/simulated decompression diving.

  • Limited visibility or night diving.

  • Underwater navigation.

  • Search and recovery – light salvage.
     

You may also choose from many different dives for your elective dives such as:
 

  • Skin diving.

  • Environmental study or survey.

  • Air consumption (practical application).

  • Boat diving.

  • Shore diving.

  • Hunting and collection.

  • Or other special interest dives.

Minimum Age & Requirements:  Eighteen (18) years of age or older and in good physical condition, NAUI Advanced Scuba Diver certification or its equivalent, and book/study packet.
 

DRY SUIT DIVER
 

While dry suits were once used almost exclusively for situation such as ice diving or deep wreck diving, many sport divers are now using dry suits regularly for ever day recreational dives all over the world.  Perhaps you live in a cold-water climate or want to travel to one?  If so, the Dry Suit Diver course is for you!
 

The Dry Suit Diver course will give you basic knowledge and skills needed to minimize risks and gain experience in dry suit diving, as well as train you to properly use and maintain your dry suit.

Minimum Age & Requirements:  Ten (10) years of age or older and in good physical condition, and (Beginning) Scuba Diver Certification**, and a dry suit.

**
NAUI (Beginning) Scuba Diver certification or the equivalent is required for enrollment – or your NAUI instructor can teach you both courses in combination so you can be comfortable and warm for your very first open water dive.
 

RESCUE DIVER

This course trains divers in the knowledge and skills needed to manage risks and effectively handle limited in-water problems and diving emergencies. 
 

  • Diver transports.

  • Surface rescues and rescued from depth involving both boat and shore based skin and scuba divers.

  • In-water rescue breathing.

  • Gear removal techniques.

  • First aid applications and oxygen usage.

  • General accident management.

Minimum Age & Requirements:  Fifteen (15) years of age or older and in good physical condition, NAUI Advanced Scuba Diver certification or its equivalent, and book/study packet.

WRECK DIVER

This course is designed to provide the diver with the skills and knowledge needed to gain experience and minimize risks in wreck diving.  Wreck diving (external survey) is defined as diving around a sunken vessel, aircraft or debris field.

Included in this course:

  • Safety, hazards and cautions.

  • Special risks of overhead environments.

  • Limited visibility.

  • Deep diving.

  • Equipment (additions and modifications).

  • Locations of wrecks, sources of information, search methods and underwater navigation.

  • Legal aspects, artifacts, treasure, salvage, archaeology.

  • Altitude procedures and flying after diving.

Minimum Age & Requirements:  Eighteen (18) years of age or older and in good physical condition, and Advanced Scuba Diver Certification.
 

DEEP DIVER

This course is designed to provide the diver with the skills and knowledge needed to plan and make deep dives while minimizing risks and avoiding the need for stage decompression.  Deep diving is defined as dives made between 60 and 130 feet. 

Included in this course:

  • Problems, hazards, planning, preparation and equipment.

  • Depth management.

  • Air supplies and gas management.

  • Emergency and decompression procedures.

  • Concepts of dive computers.

  • Repetitive dive tables and dive planning.

  • Altitude procedures and flying after diving.

Minimum Age & Requirements:  Eighteen (18) years of age or older and in good physical condition, and Advanced Scuba Diver Certification.
 

TRAINING ASSISTANT

This course will qualify you in the skills and knowledge necessary to perform as a training assistant during diver training courses overseen by an active-status NAUI Instructor.

As a certified NAUI Training Assistant, you will be qualified to temporarily directly supervise students while an instructor conducts skills with other students; escort students on the surface or on underwater tours; and assist an active-status NAUI Instructor with other tasks, all under the direction of a NAUI instructor.

Included in this course:

  • Compass navigation; underwater communications.
  • Assisting divers with cramps, anxiety, breathing difficulties, and signs of pre-panic.
  • Escorting a diver to safety.
  • Escorting divers during an open water dive.
  • Performing a scuba diver rescue.

While certification as a Training Assistant does not confer any NAUI Leadership certification, the experience, knowledge and confidence you gain working as a Training Assistant can help you achieve your goal of becoming a NAUI member!

Minimum Age & Requirements:  Eighteen (18) years of age or older and in good physical condition, have the training and experience equivalent to at least NAUI Advanced Diver, have certification in NAUI Scuba Rescue Diver or equivalent, and have current CPR and First Aid certifications.
